Getting Marrried

Back in the 1800s it was a huge thing for a person to get married. Especially a woman. If a woman wasn't married others were quick to judge her and she was looked down upon. Why do you think unmarried women were treated like this? Do you think things have changed since that time?

  1. If a woman was not married that could mean she has a default. Maybe she is not able to produce children. It shows other men that these women have defaults and that makes them not want to marry these women. Also some women might be labeled a witch if they did not have a husband.

  2. I agree with Jade. They were looked upon as old maids that were undesirable. If they did end up marrying, then she would probably end up with a loser becasue she's "old". So marrying young is a really good thing, you get the best of the crop and you are in the prime of your life. They also didn't live as long as we do today.

  3. They were probably treated like that because they didn't work outside the home so if they weren't married they had no one to provide for them. The woman's only job was to have and raise children so if she wasn't married she couldn't do that and she was probably looked at as a failure because she only has one responsibility and she couldn't do it. I think today it is still a big deal for women to be married not because society tells them to but because they don't want to be alone. No one wants to spend their life alone so we are always looking for that right person, but some women are very happy and successful by themselves.
