If you were in the hospital for several weeks and had to share a room with someone else and got to really know them how would you react if one day you woke up and the nurse told you that they had died while you were asleep?
I would probably be pretty upset but if I had only known them a short time it wouldn't have the same effect on me as it would if it were a family member or someone really close to me. I would probably be more freaked out that I didn't wake up when they died but relieved at the same time because that wouldn't be something you'd want to wake up too.
I would be upset, after being in a single room with that same person day in and day out, you would have had the perfect opportunity to get to know them really well and experience something sad, like being in the hospital, with them. Even though that person wasnt exactly family, I would still feel at a loss.
